Beach Walk, Daymer Bay - Cornwall oil on board 60 x 50 New work
Inspiration:
My work is driven by a love of nature – of the seasons, the weather, the patterns in the landscape and particularly by atmosphere and light. I live and work in Warwickshire but take frequent trips to Cornwall and France – I am inspired by the landscapes I find there.
Approach:
Working in oils enables me to construct my paintings gradually – I am often working on several paintings at the same time, so that they can be left, considered and returned to. I start with an idea, but the process sometimes leads me elsewhere. I work less and less from the subject, more frequently from photos, memories, drawings – I find that working this way gives me the freedom to interpret the subject from a distance, not just compositionally but in terms of atmosphere and feeling. My work appears representational but it is always a mix of the literal and the imagination. When working in mixed media I take a similar approach, working my paintings up gradually, working in considered layers, editing the subject as I go.
